04 Solberga Gård is one of the oldest farms in Öland, and one of the very few with a mansion dating back to the 19th century. The farm once was one of the wealthiest in the island, and one can still sense the more than 400 years of history of this place.
Solberga grows only organic vegetables since 1988 - including asparagus, garlic, pumpkins and a wide range of other plants, in total 140 species. There are also pigs, sheep, rabbits, cats and horses, all at home in generous stables and most of the time out on the meadows.
Sustainability is our greatest concern: we wish to combine the production of organic foodstuffs with first class meals in our restaurant and long-lasting holiday memories.

To become sustainable, we have implemented a wide range of measures:

  • agriculture is certified by KRAV, a very strict Swedish label for foods. For instance, all fertilizer we use is organic, as is all the fodder for the animals.
  • all heat and warm water in buildings is produced through geothermal water heating. The electricity needed for the pump is 100% green, coming from wind- and hydropower. All wood used for heating purposes also comes from our own forest.
  • we only use organic foodstuffs in the restaurant. This goes even beyond the standards for organic restaurants labelled with KRAV.
  • we encourage our guests to arrive by train or bus, and we do anything to support environmentally friendly travel. For instance, we provide a pick-up service, rent bicycles, and provide everything from towels to linen and toys for children, so that you can travel as light as possible.
  • In 2014 we will try to build a small wind power station. The wind power station is supposed to produce exactly the amount of energy we use annually, i.e. 100,000 kWh. We are currently discussing our plans with Swedish wind power company WindEn (www.winden.se).

O
ne problem that we have yet to solve is the use of fossil fuels for agriculture and transports, as well as the emissions stemming from the arrival of our guests. We will try to find an innovative solution for this over the next years and are currently cooperating with Atmosfair (www.atmosfair.de) to compensate our emissions.
